Engineering is often presented as a world of certainty. Materials have published properties. Simulations produce precise results. Design standards define safe limits. Yet in practice, components fail unexpectedly, projects drift despite careful planning, and systems behave in ways that specifications alone cannot explain.
That gap between theory and reality has shaped my career.
I currently lead a multi-million-dollar advanced materials research portfolio at a government research institute in Abu Dhabi, overseeing programmes spanning composites, functional coatings, structural materials, metamaterials, and emerging technologies. Before moving into research leadership, I spent eight years in chemical process and equipment engineering in India, working on industrial systems, heat exchangers, and certification projects. I later completed an M.Sc. in Polymer Material Science at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in Germany, conducting research with the Fraunhofer Society before transitioning into advanced materials R&D.
Much of my work focuses on understanding why real systems deviate from engineering assumptions. Whether it is fibre orientation in injection-moulded composites, the limitations of finite element simulations, or the behaviour of conductors under extreme electromagnetic loading, I am interested in the physical mechanisms that sit between design intent and actual performance. This blog explores those questions through accessible, evidence-based discussions of materials behaviour, manufacturing science, failure analysis, and engineering decision-making.
Beyond engineering, I write about leadership and human decision-making. My non-fiction book, Instinctive Navigation, explores how experienced leaders make sound decisions under uncertainty by combining analytical thinking with knowledge gained through experience. My novel, The Way Back to You, reflects a different interest — the ways memory, relationships, and time shape the choices we make. Both are available on Amazon.
Across engineering, research, leadership, and writing, a common thread runs through my work: understanding complex systems beyond what is immediately visible, and translating that understanding into practical insight.
